A Cold Joshua Tree Engagement Session

February 12, 2020

Joshua Tree is one of the most magical places on the planet. It has multiple vortexes, which makes the park even better. I love the way that Erika from With Salted Bones used the landscape while shooting this engagement session. It's such a sweet and beautiful session I knew I wanted to share it.

What was your inspiration behind the shoot and the use of light?

I wanted to capture the cinematic scenery of the desert, embracing the harsh light and warm tones. I’ve wanted to shoot in Joshua Tree for years as I grew up in the desert and have always been drawn to the warm browns, deep greens and beautiful sunsets.

How did you prepare your clients for this type of session?

We planned over the course of a month, coordinating outfits, color schemes and talking about how we wanted to approach the shoot. My clients were completely down for me trying out anything creative but also incorporating more classic poses.

What techniques did you use that were out of the norm?

I normally never shoot with a super wide lens, I’m faithful to a fault to my 50mm so I pushed out of my comfort zone to use a 24mm to really capture the gorgeous landscape and also incorporated some 85mm shots to focus on the couple and their emotions.

Any advice to other clients or photographers who want to do this type of shoot?

Embrace the scenery, keep your outfits and editing complementary to the landscape and if you’re going in February like I did, bring hot hands!
